“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it.
It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”
Luke 6:46-49
We may never have to face life-altering storms like the ones that send people fleeing from their homes, but the storms of life will come to each of us at some point. Illness, loss, unemployment, broken relationships, relocations—changes we don’t welcome or invite into our lives definitely knock the peace and calm right out of us. So how can we be prepared when those storms come?
These verses tell us: You build your life on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ, not the shaky foundation of popular culture. Trends will never last, and the opinions of others will constantly change. Only Jesus never changes. (I am the Lord, and I do not change. Malachi 3:6) You listen to God and learn truth by studying His Word. If you know where He stands, you will always know where you stand. (Teach them your word, which is truth. John 17:17) When storms threaten, when temptation pulls, you stand firm. You obey Him. Period. There is no gray area. (If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all. Isaiah 7:9)
Think of each Bible reading as a brick, and every prayer as the mortar. Brick by brick, prayer by prayer, your strong foundation in Christ is built. It is not built overnight. It takes time and intentionality, but it is SO worth it! Keep laying those “bricks” on the Rock of Jesus Christ. Your foundation will stand firm, and your faith will stand the test of time. It will weather ANY storm! You are deeply loved!
