Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new.
Isaiah 43:18-19 (MSG)
It’s finally here—the time of year when the weather cools and all the green leaves begin to turn. Trees no longer need the nutrients the leaves provided throughout the previous season, so the vibrant greens of summer become the glorious and cozy shades of fall we all love. God created those trees to let go of what they no longer need, because they can’t flourish in the spring if they have held onto their decayed leaves all winter. But when the trees let their leaves fall, just as their Designer intended, they are ready for new growth in spring and abundant fruit come summer.
God created us to do the same. But sometimes we hold onto things from one season that aren’t good for us in the next. Things that keep us from growing and thriving, from all that will come to us when our hearts are open to the new growth Jesus brings. Shame, resentment, fear, bitterness, self-doubt, guilt, and regret are commonly the “dead leaves” we allow to pile up in our hearts. Like a tree full of dead leaves, perhaps we just need to give our hearts a good shake for them to let go and let what’s dead fall away. Then Jesus can fill them with what He chooses—good spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22-23).
Every difficult relationship or painful experience can be excuses that hold you back, or you can let go of what no longer helps you grow and thrive. As you let those dead things fall away, you will open yourself up to new growth, new life, new thoughts, and a beautiful faith. Letting go isn’t about forgetting people or events or difficult seasons that have shaped your life. It’s simply remembering that none of those things should define or label you. Only Jesus can do that! As you enjoy this beautiful season and watch the leaves swirl and dance in the wind, let them remind you to let go of the things that are keeping you from God’s best. Let your leaves fall and you will flourish with new growth in spring and abundant fruit come summer!
You are loved!
