These two things cannot change: God cannot lie when he makes a promise, and he cannot lie when he makes an oath. These things encourage us who came to God for safety.

They give us strength to hold on to the hope we have been given. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, sure and strong.

Hebrews 6:18-19 (NCV)

If you’ve ever walked along a seashore and looked out at the horizon, you’ve probably seen an empty boat or two gently bobbing on the waves. The boats aren’t just floating aimlessly around in the water; they are anchored there to keep them safe. Even in powerful storms, boats that are firmly anchored a safe distance from shore can weather those storms fairly well, as long as they have the freedom to move with the waves and dance in the wind. Without those strong anchors holding them securely, they would drift far away. They would inevitably be tossed against sharp rocks, they would be overcome with water, and they would ultimately be destroyed.

We anchor ourselves to all kinds of things: relationships, money, careers, hobbies, causes, habits, sports, and even politicians. But when we put our hope in any of the temporary things of this world that constantly change, we will eventually find ourselves beaten and battered against a few sharp rocks. Because when the storms of life come our way—when our relationships, our jobs, our careers, and our money drift over the horizon, our hope will disappear with them. The only Hope that never fails, never changes, and keeps every promise is JESUS! He is the only Anchor for our souls that holds us securely no matter how bad the storm.

You will face stormy circumstances within your family, your community, or your country, and things can easily feel out of control. You will find yourself grasping for things to make you feel more secure. But God will use every storm in your life to draw you closer to Him. You just need to let go of your need to feel in control and allow Jesus to hold you securely in the wind and the waves. When you try to do everything in your own power and resist surrender, you will believe He’s keeping you stuck, rather than giving you freedom. Jesus wants you to move WITH the waves, to keep dancing even in the middle of the storms, because every storm eventually comes to an end. And every boat sails on smooth waters once again. Don’t wait for the next storm to trust your Anchor—invite Him on every part of your voyage. Only He can keep you from being tossed about by this world, because His promises never fail, and He promises to hold you securely. And whatever Jesus holds can never be destroyed! You are loved!
