When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.
1 Corinthians 13:11
It happens to every Christian at some point, and it’s absolutely necessary for growth. We see who we are now, compared to who God expects us to be, and we recognize that there are changes we need to make in order to move forward in our faith, and in life. We begin to identify relationships that actually hurt our walk with Jesus, and other obstacles that keep us from the life God desires. We wake up to the realization that the way things are and our best interests are no longer a good fit.
What makes us hold onto “childish things” is our lack of growth. Sometimes we get stuck where we are simply because it’s easier than moving forward. Other times, we feel defeated by our negativity, and our minds cling to childish thinking. But all of that can be overcome by the power of God’s Word. The more time we spend with Him in prayer, and in His Word, the more we begin to think like Him. When we begin to think like Him, we grow out of our childish thinking. And when we start applying His wisdom to our daily lives, we put away childish things. We begin growing our faith.
Where do you want your faith to be ten years from now? In ten years, you will be ten years older, whether you grow in your faith or not, whether you leave “childish things” behind or not. The only question is this: What do you want your faith and your life to look like then? Be intentional about spending time with Jesus; it is the most beneficial thing you can do to improve your life, and it is something you will never regret!! You are loved!
