John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus,

“Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”

Jesus told them, “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen— the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.”

Matthew 11:2-6

John sat in that cold, dark prison cell, where darkness overpowered and the enemy made him question truth. At times, that happens to each of us, too. When we are in darkness due to difficult circumstances, the enemy’s voice is the loudest. We hear him questioning our faith; we allow our doubts to speak louder than the truth. But that isn’t the end of the story, unless we allow it to be. It is actually a beautiful opportunity to follow John’s example: to dig deeper, to pray continuously, and to amplify the truth and silence every bit of the doubt.

Jesus didn’t rebuke John’s doubt. He simply stated the facts and reminded John of the evidence: He is the Messiah, He heals, He restores, He gives life, and no one is excluded from His grace. Jesus isn’t disappointed with our doubt, but He IS fighting to keep our doubt from becoming our truth. He is with us, right there in the middle of our darkness and doubt, speaking truth and love and life!

You may be doubting God’s ability to shine His light into your current circumstances. You may feel that you are in a cold, dark prison cell of fear, where your doubts scream louder than the truth of Jesus. If so, you have two choices: you can turn away from Jesus and remain in that darkness, or you can run TO Him and find grace, acceptance, everlasting love, and the Light of the World. One choice leads to greater suffering, the other leads to life and peace. Ask Him to show you the facts, remind you of the evidence, and show you exactly who He is. He will silence every bit of your doubt! You are loved!
