Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
Ecclesiastes 7:8 (ESV)
Every year around this time, millions of us make promises to ourselves. We set goals, make lists of things we hope to achieve, and then we set out with our best efforts to reach our goals. But by the time the calendar turns to January a year from now, less than 10% of us will have reached those goals. Starting out isn’t the problem; finishing well is the problem. Our pride often jumps out ahead of us, and ahead of God, giving us all kinds of false hope. But it’s patience, and a whole lot of perseverance, that will actually get us to our goals.
In order to be part of that 10% and end this year strong, it will take much more than hard work. It will require patience, discipline, and wisdom. It will require pulling up close to God, and setting our hearts on God’s heart, God’s desires, and God’s power. This year, rather than making promises to ourselves, and inevitably beating ourselves up for our disappointing efforts and achievements, maybe we should simply receive what He already offers. Perhaps, rather than listening to the voices around us that tell us to lose weight or work harder or save money, we just need to listen to the voice of our Creator, who always knows exactly what we need when we need it.
As you start back to school or work or whatever routine you call your normal, tune your ears, your heart, and your mind to God. Dig into His Word and allow only His voice to define who you are and who you will be a year from today. It is easy to get pulled in all directions, but if you make it habit of starting your day with God’s voice, and ending your day thanking Him for every moment, you will be much more likely to be one of the 10% at the end of the year. This year, pull close to Jesus, let patience rule, and look forward to your best year yet! You are loved!
