For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’
Acts 4:11
In ancient building practices, the cornerstone was used as the foundation and standard upon which the rest of a building was built. It was one of the largest, most solid, meticulously constructed stones of a structure, so important that if it was removed, the building would collapse. As long as the cornerstone was solid and straight, the building would be solid and straight, but if it was weak and unsteady, the entire building would be unstable.
In the Bible, Jesus is called the “cornerstone” because His Church, and everything we believe, is based on Him! He existed before anything was created (Colossians 1:15), yet He was rejected by most. He died for our sins and His sacrifice is what makes it possible for us to have a permanent relationship with Him. That sacrifice made Him our cornerstone. He is solid and secure, and we can trust that as long as we continue to keep our eyes on Him, our lives will be solid and secure, as well. We can stand tall and strong, because lives built on Him will never come crashing down.
On what stone are you building your life? Take an honest look at what motivates you every day. Perhaps your life is built stones of fear and insecurity which cause you to strive and prove. Or it is built on a stone of success, a stone of effort, a stone of popularity or relationships or talents. If it is built on any one of those, your life will be unstable. Because anything other than Jesus is temporary, and all those other stones will crumble. Only when you build your life on Jesus, will you have a firm foundation. When He is your cornerstone, your solid rock—unmoving, stable, and secure—you can’t go wrong. Storms will come, and life’s stresses will press in, but He will keep your life solid and your path straight, as long as you keep your eyes on Him. Build your life on nothing less! You are loved!
