Jesus answered, “Because your faith is too small. I tell you the truth, if your faith is as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain,
‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. All things will be possible for you.
Matthew 17:20 (NCV)
Sometimes in life, we get so fixated on a problem that we make it into a mountain. What may actually be more of a speed bump, we see as an ominous, steep, impassable rock that casts a dark shadow over everything that is good in our lives. The more we worry about it, the bigger it becomes. It feels impossible to climb up those steep sides, and we can’t see around it, so we remain stuck. Even worse, we doubt God’s presence and power in our lives, and we feel we must move our mountains on our own.
A mustard seed is tiny, but it grows into a large plant, which produces many seeds. Like our faith, it will only grow and become capable of spreading seeds if it’s watered and fed. We start with a tiny spark of faith when we first accept Christ. Unfortunately, some people stop there, but for those who are intentional about their faith, that spark becomes a soul-deep fire. For mountain-moving, however, we don’t even need huge faith—we just need a little faith and big dependence on our enormous, powerful God.
You may be in a season of big, dark mountains that seem to be blocking the sun, but they can never block the SON! Whatever faith you have, no matter how small, it’s enough for Jesus to move those mountains. When you believe in His presence in your life and His power over your circumstances, challenges become opportunities, not obstacles. It’s when you put your little faith in His big hands that He makes it grow. By trusting Him, you learn to trust Him even more. They say that those who remove mountains begin by carrying away small stones. So if there is a mountain blocking your way, offer God your faith. He will give you what you need to move it…even if it’s one pebble at a time. You are deeply loved!
