Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything.

I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.

Philipians 4:11-12

In a culture that celebrates wealth more than generosity and fame more than humility, sometimes it’s difficult to have a heart of contentment. We allow the rich and famous in our culture to be our standard and the world to steer our values. And rather than obeying the voice of God throughout Scripture, we obey advertisements designed to make us feel like we’re missing out.

Contentment isn’t something that is achieved when you acquire everything you want. It is a state of the heart. Contentment has everything to do with Jesus—who He is and what He’s done. He chose to do it all, from creation to the cross, for YOU! True contentment can never be based on things that are worldly and temporary. Only nurturing a heart-changing relationship with Jesus can bring the joy and peace your soul craves.

Jesus had no material possessions, yet He lived in a state of peace and contentment. As your relationship with Him grows, so will your heart of contentment. Pull up close to your Savior through His Word and prayer. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but requires time and patience. It takes constant redirection of your focus to tune out the noise of advertisers and of the world. Tune your heart to Jesus and He will bring His contentment to your soul. You are loved!

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. 1 Timothy 6:6
