Even when I am afraid, I keep on trusting you. I praise your promises! I trust you and am not afraid.

Psalm 56:4 (CEV)

It isn’t easy to trust people we don’t know very well. We would never ask a stranger in an airport to watch our bag while we go grab a sandwich. We wouldn’t trust someone we’ve never met with no references to house-sit while we are out of town. And we would certainly not allow a complete stranger, who shows up on our doorstep, to spend a night in our home, drive our car, or borrow a lot of money. Trust isn’t automatic; trust is earned. With no track record, there’s no trust.

Unlike strangers, our God has an impeccable track record of keeping His promises. From before the beginning of time until forever, God’s perfect plan has never and will never change or fail. His Word tells the whole story, the whole Truth! When God says something, He does it. When He makes a promise, He keeps it (Numbers 23:19). In this verse, David begins with fear and ends with courage—and the only thing in between is this: “I keep on trusting you. I praise your promises!” Trust and praise! David simply remembered all the times God kept His promises, and trusted Him even in the most dire circumstances. He trusted God because he knew Him! Knowing God and remembering His faithfulness took David from fearful to brave.

It is easy to focus on your problems and every single one of your fears. But when you shift your perspective from yourself and your problems to Jesus and His faithfulness, you will be reminded that He keeps His promises. If you are struggling to trust God in your current circumstances, you just need to get to know Him better! Instead of focusing on your problems, focus on the cross! Trust isn’t automatic, trust is earned. And God proved His love for you and His faithfulness when He sacrificed His own Son to give you life! So open your Bible and check out His track record. Then lock eyes with your Savior and confidently declare, “I praise your promises! I trust you and am not afraid!” You are loved!
