"Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.
Revelation 3:20
Sometimes, we can’t even hear Jesus knocking. The distractions and the noise of this world: our phones, social media, and the constant noise we use to avoid being alone with our thoughts, are effective in muffling Jesus’ powerful knock.
Other times, we hear the knocking, but we can’t get to the door. Sin blocks our way; it keeps us from the Truth that’s on the other side of that door. It trips us up, it makes us stumble and struggle, and in spite of our mighty efforts, we can never reach the door knob.
Often, we hear the knocking, but we keep opening all the wrong doors. We open the doors to instant gratification, the doors that satisfy our sinful pleasures, and the doors of popularity, pride, and people-pleasing. All those doors deceive, and they only appear to be more attractive than the one that welcomes our Savior.
And sometimes, we hear Jesus knocking but simply don’t believe that He has what we need. We reject His offer, like we reject any solicitors at our door. We ignore Him, we hide, and we hope He will just go away.
While this verse seems to be about Jesus calling your heart to His, it’s actually about your commitment to Him. Are you one of the distracted, or are you kept at a distance because of sin in your life? Perhaps you are hearing His call but keep answering the wrong doors that lead to sin, rather than to God Himself. Or are you one that believes Jesus has simply chosen the wrong door on which to knock, because you have no interest in hearing what He has to say? It’s time to boldly step up to that door and fling it wide open! Everything you need is just on the other side! Invite Him in! You will never want Him to leave!! You are loved!
