Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.

Psalm 119:89 (NASB)

We live in a culture that encourages freedom. It’s a powerful theme in our Constitution. We are encouraged to live for ourselves, and we are taught that it is freedom, that the “good life” is doing, having, and being whatever we want. But if so many people are living “the good life”, why are they plagued with chronic depression, anxiety, discouragement, and discontentment?

As Christians, we know that living only for oneself is the fast track to dissatisfaction and disaster. Living a self-focused life is not freedom…it’s a prison. It creates an endless cycle of striving and dissatisfaction—striving for what makes us happy, but never being satisfied. Jesus knows this and has rescued us from our self-created prison cells. He wants us to come to Him, to live in the freedom He offers, and to live in a way that honors Him. That means following the path of righteousness the Bible, His very Word, has already paved.

God’s Word was “settled in heaven” before ever coming to earth, long before we ever came to be. And if something is settled in heaven by God, we certainly don’t have the right to unsettle it. God’s truth doesn’t change just because we disagree with it. Truth is still truth, whether we believe it or not. God’s Truth didn’t change with kings and civilizations that came and went. It doesn’t change with the opinions of our culture. It doesn’t change with national leaders or wars or evil unseen forces. It does not change, because forever His Word is settled!

If your heart is unsettled, you’re probably looking at your present circumstances, which constantly change, even though they may feel very much stuck. But when you look to the unchanging truth of God’s Word, Jesus will show you that He has already unlocked the prison door. You just need to open the door and take His hand. He will lead you to “the good life” you’ve been looking for. You are loved!

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32
