Then Jesus said, “I am the bread that gives life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6:35

Some days it feels like we’re running on empty. Everyone around us seems to need something, and it’s hard to give people what they need when we are sputtering on fumes. All the demands for our time and attention can suck the energy right out of us. When impatience wins, when ugly words rule, and when negative thoughts take control, we know we need to refuel. But if we wait too long, we leave all that ugliness and negativity in our wake. We need to take action long before the fruits of the Spirit in our lives begin to fall from the tree and rot.

Our souls need the bread of life and the living water Jesus gives (John 4:13). But instead of filling up on all that He offers, sometimes we try to snack on the crumbs, and expect a few drops of Jesus sprinkled in to quench our thirst. Like putting a dollar’s worth of gas in a car at a time, it certainly won’t get us where we need to be, and the tank will soon be just as empty. So setting aside time to make spiritual nourishment a priority is a must. Stopping to refuel with Jesus is never a waste of time, and it is essential for living life with Him.

As a follower of Christ, you know the sustenance you need. The question is, when are you going to come to the table? When are you going to intentionally and actively seek nourishment for your soul? Before you end up running on fumes, before you are sputtering and frustrated, fill up! Ask Jesus to remind you when you need to be refreshed and how to make Him your priority every day, so that your tank is never empty. He will strengthen and nourish you with exactly what your heart needs. So grab a chair, pull up to the table, and feast! You are deeply loved!

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”  Matthew 4:4
