“You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.

Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” “What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

John 18:37-38

If someone were to jump from the 6th floor of a building, they would likely die, even if they had never heard of gravity. If a person tried to pay their rent from a bank account that was overdrawn, they might very well get evicted, even if they had little understanding of the laws of mathematics. And if they robbed a bank, they would definitely go to prison, even if they didn’t have a full understanding of our country’s judicial system. In our culture, many believe that truth is relative, and that like laws created by man, it changes to fit the attitudes of the times. They believe it is an ideology created by man or a myth dreamed up hundreds of years ago to control the masses. But truth is still truth regardless of how people try to explain it away. Truth is still truth whether or not people believe it or understand it—just as gravity is still gravity, mathematics is still mathematics, and the law is the still law.

The question Pilate should have asked is, “Who is truth?” Jesus doesn’t just TELL the truth about God, He IS the Truth of God! He is our Source of truth—truth, that like Him, never, ever changes (Hebrews 13:8). It is the same today as it was in the past, and the very same truth will meet us in the future. Because the truth of God isn’t a set of rules that can be changed or a man-made ideology to follow. It is Jesus!! Jesus Himself is the truth that sets us free (John 8:30-32). He is the way, the truth, and the life—the ONLY way to the Father (John 14:6). And His arms are open wide enough to hold anyone who comes to Him through faith.

If you are on the side of popular opinion, you listen to the world. And the world will tell you one thing one day and something entirely different the next. But if you are “on the side of truth”, you listen to Jesus. He is the King of the World and exactly what this world desperately needs. Point people to Him, because life is still life, love is still love, and Jesus is still Truth! You are loved!
